TL;DR
OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT 5.0 is their next model.
There are strong indications that ChatGPT 5.0 will be released in the next several months.
ChatGPT 5.0 will be powered by Strawberry, a new iteration of OpenAI's large language models, and Orion, OpenAI's yet-to-be released multimodal AI application.
The price tag on ChatGPT 5.0 is predicted to be significantly higher compared to 4o pricing.
Murmurings have turned to chatter that has quickly turned to feverish anticipation – yes, I’m talking about ChatGPT 5.0. What do we know so far? Well, not too much... but certainly enough to give some contours to what we can expect once ChatGPT 5 is released. Below, we'll give you the rundown, with links to information that comes directly from OpenAI and Sam Altman, as well as links to other credible reports.
What is ChatGPT 5.0?
ChatGPT 5.0 is the successor to ChatGPT 4o, the current full version of ChatGPT that OpenAI first announced in May and released shortly thereafter. ChatGPT 5.0 will have many new features and capabilities beyond 4.0. We'll discuss what we know so far later in this article. But first, let's get to everyone's most pressing question: When will ChatGPT 5.0 become available?
ChatGPT 5 .0 Release Date: When will ChatGPT 5 be released?
OpenAI themselves have hinted that ChatGPT 5.0 will debut possibly before 2024 is over (will they mark the two-year anniversary of the release of ChatGPT 3.5 in epic fashion?). The hints have come from many channels, including this official OpenAI blog post from July, and the interesting moment from an interview with Sam Altman, seen in the video below. Altman is evasive, but the interviewer is persistent:
Although Business Insider speculated that ChatGPT 5.0 would be released this summer, we now have many indications from OpenAI that ChatGPT 5.0 will become available in late 2024, or in early 2025 at the latest. So at the very least, in less than six months, we will behold a model that many believe will be a gamechanger, much the same way 3.5 was.
What do we really know so far?
And is it possible that what we are seeing is nothing more than hype?
Well, here is what we do know, and I’ll let you be the judge.
ChatGPT 5.0 Features
At present, even the most sophisticated LLMs are not that strong at logical analysis. This is what makes the typical human Ph.D. holder so formidable—they are able to break down a problem and analyze its constituent parts, then be able to apply the learnings to novel, unforeseen problems.
It is not that the current ChatGPT 4o can’t more or less wing this. It is a master b.s.-er after all. But to be able to do legitimate analysis, it needs someone with domain expertise who is sharp.
With ChatGPT 5.0, this could all change based on two technologies that will form the underpinning of this new technology – code-named Strawberry and Orion.
Meet Strawberry
It is OpenAI's hope that Strawberry will be the Ph.Ds in your pocket, able to analyze logically about problems. According to a recent report from Tech Crunch, Strawberry is designed to actually “think” 10-20 seconds before coming up with an answer. If you are familiar with the work of Daniel Kahneman, this parallels how our own brain’s work, as deeper, logical thinking takes time (this is something Kahneman calls System 2 thinking). You can also see Strawberry in action right now, as it's available through ChatGPT. For details on how to access the new Strawberry model, video walkthroughs of Strawberry in action, and some early research findings on this model's abilities, check out our blog post on OpenAI Strawberry!
...And this is Orion
Orion, on the other hand, is the multimodal aspect of ChatGPT 5.0. Think of coming up with a video for marketing outreach, asking the model for feedback, then re-recording with higher level precision. We’ve yet to play with it, but it could even be able to generate a video based on your feedback, using an AI-ified version of you (stay tuned!).
Together, they’ll possibly make ChatGPT 5.0, the Ph.D. level expert who is able to initiate research on their own, run actual studies using its own internal agents, and come up with a fully-fledged research paper (doing image analysis, thanks to Orion’s capabilities). If ChatGPT and the gang were coming for white collar jobs, ChatGPT 5.0 is clearly coming for the Ivory Tower.
Of course, large businesses do plenty of research, both formal and informal, and being able to have a full-time virtual business analyst or data scientist (one who doesn’t get tired and can work at many times the speed of an actual human) opens up a whole new vista of use cases.
Will ChatGPT 5.0 be free?
The answer to this question is yes and no, but mostly no. Yes, ChatGPT Strawberry, which OpenAI also refers to as ChatGPT o1, is already available in beta form at no additional charge to those who already have a $20 a month subscription to the established ChatGPT service. So a limited preview of one component of ChatGPT 5.0-- Strawberry-- is cheap or free-ish. For the whole ChatGPT 5.0 package though, there’s a HUGE added wrinkle of pricing. What we know is that ChatGPT 5.0 might cost businesses as much as $2,000 per month. If true, this will place the new model beyond the reach of most individual users.
Does that mean all but those with deep wallets will have access to all of the model’s cutting-edge features? These are the questions we simply won’t be able to answer until the product debuts and perhaps even a bit after—OpenAI has often rolled out features, across different tiers of users. Who exactly is getting what, and at what price, might take months to really fall into place.
A little ChatGPT 5.0 Speculation and Some Final Thoughts (for now)
If I may hazard a prediction: future success with ChatGPT 5 will hinge on who knows how to employ this new model best for specific use cases, negotiating the model's little quirks (just like the current LLMs, I’m sure this model will have a few unexpected idiosyncrasies to how it works). It is one thing to come up with a GenAI solution to a use case; it is another to come up with a very clever one—those benefits will redound across scale. Gone will be coders and in will be AI whisperers.
Of course, I’m teetering a little into speculation here. Until we actually see how well ChatGPT 5.0 can do any of this, any such gushing over possible futures feels a little premature. For now, we should expect to be wowed, expect even more anticipation–and hype—as the day draws nearer.
Will ChatGPT 5.0 bowl us over? Probably. Will we be disappointed? Some of us, inevitably.
Regardless, what we will most likely have is a model that once again will force us to rethink how we go about using AI to boost our creativity and productivity, while also opening up new horizons in what we’ll be able to do. And I’ll make a wager that those who learn how to savvily and creatively wield these models will be a quantum leap ahead of those who think a prompt and a push of a button is all you need.
